contact Dave Chick - 1968 AMX

I purchased this car, a 1968 AMX in February 1999 with 88,000 miles on the body. The car was disassembled, it had been painted and not reassembled. Lots of parts were missing such as brake lines, booster, master cylinder, fan, shroud, alternator ect. The interior had a carpet kit and two seats that were redone. Missing were the headliner, sail panels, plastic quarter trim, rear quarter kick panels, and rear window trim. My wife and I made the sail panels, rear quarter kick panels and the headliner. I purchased the plastic trim parts that were missing and dyed everything red to match.

The guy I bought the car through was very helpful with odd parts and sources of supply. A lot of parts came from other AMC cars, lots of common parts. I purchased a '68 Javelin for parts as well, that was the best $400 ever spent.

The brakes were shot and was the first thing I worked on. The rears were easy, you can get all the parts new at Pep Boys or Kragen. The fronts came from a 1977 Matador, Bendix single piston disk brakes from Ecology. I even ran the pads for about a year before replacing them. I first drove the car in August 1999 after six months of scrounging parts and figuring out where everything went.

The engine had been rebuilt, the trans was supposed to be fairly new but it broke after about 5,000 miles. I had it rebuilt and it broke again right before Christmas last year. This time I did the work myself and it has lasted so far, knock on wood!

The car now has 99,000 miles on it. The engine is a 401, the trans a 727 Torqueflight. The car is Frost White with Matador red go-pack stripes masked by me and painted by David at Lloyd Auto Body. The interior is red. The car has power steering with tilt, power disk brakes, light group, go pack with 3.15 posi.
